Odense, Denmark to Svendborg, Denmark

12 July

For the second day in a row, we didn't have any rain (at least while I was riding). I left Odense by myself in the morning. (Stephannie still wasn't feeling well, and took the train to Svendborg.) I rode through the suburbs, and out across farmland south of the city. It was a beautiful day to ride. Because it wasn't raining, there was a steady wind, but I never had to ride into it. In fact, as I covered the gently rolling land, I rarely had to downshift.

The Line Outside of Egeskov Castle

About half way to Svendborg, I came to Egeskov castle. It is the best preserved Renaissance castle in Europe, but from what I saw, it was Denmark's answer to Disney World. There were acres of parking lots and quite a line to get in. I stopped only for a moment. A little further on, I came to a lovely windmill in a field by itself. No one was visiting that.

From Egeskov, I flew across rolling farmland, and was soon in Svendborg. I made the whole ride of 59 kilometers in about 3 1/2 hours, with a couple of stops, including one for lunch. Svendborg is a seaside town, just like any that you would find on the Jersey or Massachusetts shores, except that the buildings are older and the roads are cobbled.
