Fri - December 19, 2003 What Have I Done? Yesterday afternoon, at work without much to do, I sat at my desk singing the "Badger, Badger, Badger" song to myself and aimlessly wandering the Web. I had just run into Bob, and he was telling me about his G5. I looked again at the dual-processor 1.8 GHz model that I covet, and as I was doing so, I noticed that Apple's offering interest-free financing for up to 180 days. I could have a new G5 to play with during my time off over the holidays, and I wouldn't have to pay for it until June. I succumbed. Last night, in an attempt to justify this surrender to acquisitive, consumerist impulse to myself, I began learning objective-C, the language in which I would be doing all of the development for which I needed this shiny new computer. The flimsiness of my rationalizations aside, objective-C is an interesting language, and Apple provides an excellent description in their documentation. I only know a single programming language (Java). Exploring another is helping me to better understand the idea of a programming language, just as learning a foreign language helps you to better understand the idea of grammar. I look forward to learning more once I have my new toy. |
